Butterbean Costumes

Butterbean Costumes

For Halloween, Melody wanted to go as characters from Butterbean’s Cafe. She wanted to be Butterbean, Brad went as Jasper, and I went as Poppy. This was definitely one of the more DIY Halloweens, so I thought I would share most of what I did to make our costumes.

Butterbean

Butterbean was the easiest because I bought the costume from Amazon. I am thankful she wanted to do it this year, because I doubt I could find one any bigger. I had to end up getting two different costumes before finding one that fit. Even the one we ended up with had a poor design for wings. The wings were simply held on with velcro. I should have added straps, but I talked myself out of it beforehand. The wings lasted maybe three houses before I took them. Other than that, the costume was perfect.

Jasper

Jasper required a bit of craftiness on my part, but it was still fairly simple. Brad used mostly clothes and shoes he owned. I bought a blue shirt from Hobby Lobby and added a yellow lightning bolt to it. Then I found dragonfly wings from Walmart. They were green and pink, so I bought from green spray paint and painted them that way. Then I added yellow felt lightning bolts to them.

Poppy

Poppy was a whole other story in the amount of time and energy I had to put into the costume. The general outfit I bought. I found the orange t-shirt dress at Target. The blue leggings and blue glasses both came from Amazon. I did buy some white Keds from Target to paint yellow, but I didn’t have time. So I just wore some blue shoes I had.

Now to the crafty party. My wings were supposed to look like sugar cookies with yellow flowers all over the icing. I made the flowers using yellow and orange felt. I attached them using felt glue. The wings I found at Walmart and cut some tan fabric out to go around the entire shape of the wings. I then cut out white thicker fabric to look like icing. Now to the assembling part. I attached the flower petals to the icing first with thread. Then I attached the white icing to the cookie using my sewing machine as well. When I attached the cookie to the wings I used fabric glue. I knew this would be way easier than sewing them together.

The apron I made in a very lazy way because I knew I would not ever use it. I cut out orange fabric into the apron shape. I sewed yellow ribbon onto it to use as a tie. Then I used my Silhouette Cameo to make the pocket.

The last thing I did was make a hair clip. I used two of the flowers and hot glued then onto a barrette.

Overall the costumes turned out great, I think. I do wished I had taken more pictures of the process when I was making everything, but it just did not happen this time!
